Dublin Port Company is a State-owned commercial company responsible for operating and developing Dublin Port. Dublin Port is the largest freight and passenger port in Ireland with all cargo handling activities being carried out by private sector companies operating in intensely competitive markets within the Port. Dublin Port handles almost 50% of all trade in the Republic of Ireland. Located in the heart of Dublin City and at the hub of the national road and rail network, Dublin Port is a key strategic access point for Ireland and in particular the Dublin area.
Dublin Port Company has published the draft Dublin Port Masterplan 2040 – Reviewed 2018. The first review of the Masterplan commenced in 2017 with the purpose of ensuring that the Masterplan 2040 remains relevant and achieves its central objective of providing a clear vision for the sustainable development of Dublin Port into the future.
Development works at Dublin Port are already advanced with construction of the Alexandra Basin Redevelopment (ABR) Project well underway and capital investment of €1 billion planned over the next decade.
The ABR Project is the first major capital development project from Dublin Port’s Masterplan 2040, involving an application to An Bord Pleanála for the construction of approximately 3km of quay walls, deepening of the harbour basin and channel to accommodate larger seagoing vessels as well as works associated with the conservation of the port’s Victorian industrial heritage. The scope of the ABR Project includes two major elements of dredging namely:
- Deepening of the fairway and approach to Dublin Port to increase the ruling depth from -7.8m CD to -10.0m CD.
- Alexandra Basin West – capital dredging to deepen the basin and to achieve the specified depths of -10m Chart Datum (CD) at the new berths. Treatment and placing of contaminated dredge from the bed of the basin, into existing Graving Dock Nr 2 and infilling basin at Berth 52/53.
